Luggage allowance on Japan Airlines

Japan Airlines follows the Western model of checked baggage accounting and offers the following standards:

  • Economy and Premium Economy Class – 2 pieces of luggage up to 23 kg each.
  • Business and First Class – 3 items up to 32 kg each.

Small children who do not occupy a seat are provided with the right to carry 1 baggage item up to 23 kg. The allowance is increased to the standard allowance if the child buys a separate seat (corresponding to the selected class of service).

Additional cargo over and above the norm is paid at the company’s standard tariffs in local currency at the exchange rate set by the country’s central bank.

There are several important features:

  • One passenger can carry the norm of his/her class of service + 7 additional units with a total weight not exceeding 45 kg.
  • Depending on the type of limit exceeded, there may be one or more fees.

Hand luggage

All passengers on Japan Airlines flights are allowed to take 1 piece of hand luggage and 1 personal item with total dimensions not exceeding 115 cm (55x40x25) and weighing no more than 10 kg.

Prohibited from being brought aboard a plane:

  • Any items that can be used as a weapon, including knives and large blunt objects.
  • Objects with sharp edges (hand tools, scissors, saws, stationery and Swiss knives).
  • Other dangerous personal items (such as stun guns and pepper sprays for self-defense).
  • Liquids in containers not exceeding 100 ml and in transparent compact packaging with dimensions not exceeding 80 cm around the perimeter.
  • Windproof lighters, gun-shaped lighters, gasoline lighters, matches and lithium lighters must be packed in your luggage.
  • Self-heating solder in any form (even used).

The following substances are prohibited in any form:

  • Hazardous and poisonous substances (poisons, pesticides, insecticides, alkaloids and others).
  • Flammable and explosive mixtures (dynamite, grenades, fireworks, magnesium, cellulose).
  • Adhesive, paint, bleaching and dissolving liquids.
  • Gasoline, kerosene, motor oil, ethanol, formalin, chloroform, mercury.
  • Portable lithium-ion batteries with a specific gravity of lithium greater than 2 g.
  • Gas and oxygen cylinders (except for medical use).
  • Fire extinguishers, helium in a gaseous state.
  • Hair styling devices with a chargeable, non-removable lithium-ion battery.
  • Irons, hot glue guns with liquid fuel or non-removable lithium-ion battery.
  • Non-food dry ice, non-medical activated or conventional charcoal.
  • Magnets and biomaterials for scientific or commercial purposes.

All passengers are prohibited from using any smoking paraphernalia or vaping devices.

Animal transportation

Japan Airlines transports pets with a fee for each individual container:

To transport your pet, you must reserve a ticket with the appropriate service 4 days prior to departure.

Container requirements:

  • be three-dimensional so that the animal can stand up, turn around and lie down.
  • made of durable material (Plexiglas, wood, plastic).
  • be well ventilated, but not made of mesh or metal grids.
  • wheels (if any) are well secured or removed.
  • rental containers are sanitized to prevent infestations.
  • no more than one animal per container, including rodent and small pet cases.

The following types are allowed on Japan Airlines planes:

  • Dogs and cats more than 8 weeks old.
  • Small birds that eat fruit, seeds, and insects.
  • Rodents, stoats, squirrels, chinchillas and some martens.
It is forbidden to transport pregnant animals, French bulldogs. All passengers are responsible for compliance with sanitary and epidemiological standards established in the countries of arrival.
